Most shared hosting accounts share the same IP. Why whould a user need a dedicated IP address for his or her account? There are several reasons:
- To keep your website separate from other users on the servers. When a shared IP gets blocked by some provider because of another user's activity, your websites won't be affacted.
- To meet the requirements of a particular script or application.
- To install an SSL certificate. It's highly beneficial for business to have a certificate on the domain. Thus your visitors can see that your website is trustworthy and the sensitive information they pass is protected. Besides, your web site will get higher ranking from Google.
With SNI implementation on our servers, several SSL certificates can be used on a shared IP. Since this technology is relatively new, some web browsers do not support it. These are the following (mostly old versions):
- Internet Explorer 6 or earlier and any IE version on Windows XP or earlier
- Safari on Windows XP or earlier
- BlackBerry OS 7.1 or earlier
- Windows Mobile up to 6.5
- Android default browser on Android 2.x
- wget before 1.14
- Nokia Browser for Symbian
- Opera Mobile for Symbian at least on Series60
NB Mail services still use the shared IP even with the dedicated IP address assigned to the account.
